Laguz Rune in the Poetic Edda
Laguz is the rune of water, and water is the basis of all life. Ceremonial sprinkling with water, as in baptism, is also common in the Nordic tradition.
Hávamál, Stanza 158:
“Þat kann ek it þrettánda:
ef ek skal þegn ungan
verpa vatni á,
mun-at hann falla,
þótt hann í folk komi,
hnígr-a sá halr fyr hjörum.”
I know that a thirteenth:
if I shall a young warrior
sprinkle with water,
he will not fall,
though he goes into battle,
that man does not sink before the swords.
General Meaning of the Laguz Rune
Laguz is the fundamental law of life (in Swedish, “lag” translates precisely as “law”). This symbol personifies the primordial waters of Niflheim — the world of icy mist. Consequently, these waters are considered the very foundation from which all living things arose.
Like ordinary water, Laguz is closely connected with the moon. The water in the oceans moves — flows and ebbs — exactly according to the lunar phases. The lunar cycle, in turn, is associated with the female menstrual cycle; therefore, according to some interpretations, Laguz is considered the main feminine rune. For instance, the Laguz rune correlates with blood and other fluids in the human body.
Furthermore, this rune is associated with magic and witchcraft. In the ancient words “logr” and “laukar,” its name means precisely “witchcraft.”
Ultimately, Laguz represents water, emotions, and the subconscious. It is connected with intuition, healing, and adaptability. This rune suggests trusting your instincts and accepting the natural flow of life. Therefore, it promotes emotional balance and spiritual awareness.
