II. The High Priestess

Reading The High Priestess Tarot Card

What is depicted

A woman in strict blue robes with a diadem crown (a symbol of lunar phases) sits on a throne between two temple pillars – a black one (J) and a white one (B). A cross adorns her chest, and a scroll bearing the inscription “TORA” (law/wisdom), partially concealed by her mantle, lies across her knees. Behind her hangs a veil embroidered with images of pomegranates and palm branches. The crescent moon is visible at her feet.

Semantic meaning of the elements

The black and white pillars (Jachin and Boaz) symbolize the duality of the world and the balance of opposites (darkness and light, intuition and logic). The Priestess sits strictly in the middle, reconciling them.

The veil with pomegranates conceals secret knowledge accessible only to the initiated whose inner world is sufficiently mature.

The TORA scroll points to the sacred laws of existence, which are comprehended not by the mind, but through intuitive insight.

General meaning in divination

Upright position: Intuition, the subconscious, secret knowledge, feminine wisdom, passive observation, keeping secrets, a pause for inner analysis. The situation is not yet ripe for active actions; one must listen to the inner voice and trust the signs of fate.

Reversed position: Superficiality, ignoring intuition, revealing other people’s secrets, gossip, emotional coldness, manipulation of hidden information, illusions, and self-deception.
