Sowilo Rune in the Poetic Edda
Sowilo is the rune of one hundred percent success, clarity of mind, sunlight, and victory over darkness. In Hávamál (The Sayings of the High One), the sun is praised repeatedly as the highest good that returns joy and dispels any adversity.
Hávamál, Stanza 68:
“Eldr er beztr
með ýta sonum
ok sólar sýn,
heilyndi sitt,
ef maðr hafa náir,
án við löst at lifa.”
Fire is best
among the sons of men,
and the sight of the sun,
one’s good health,
if a man can keep it,
and to live without reproach (shame).
General Meaning of the Sowilo Rune
Sowilo is the rune of the sun, representing success, energy, and personal power. It symbolizes clarity, motivation, and the victory of light over darkness.
Therefore, this rune inspires confidence and optimism. It represents the vital force that drives one toward success and achievements.
Furthermore, in the North, the cult of the sun has existed since deepest antiquity. At the center of this cult is the movement of the sun, its sunsets, and its return. The sun here signifies protection and the ability to overcome difficulties. It is a fertile force — so powerful that it helps to survive even death.
In addition, the sun is called the eye of heaven. According to legends, it is one of the eyes of Odin. The eye that he gave to the well of Mimir (a symbol of dreams, memory, and the subconscious) is precisely personified by the moon.
However, the rune of the sun also has a dark side. It relates to the destructive fire giant Surtr, who lives in Muspelheim. Consequently, Surtr embodies the strongest, but at the same time the most destructive manifestations of the sun — when it does not give life, but burns everything to ashes.
