Isa Rune in the Poetic Edda
The Isa rune often symbolizes a period of “cooling” in relationships, temporary isolation, stagnation, and loneliness, when the connections between people seem to freeze.
In this stanza, Odin describes this state with amazing accuracy: a false friendship burns with a bright flame for only five days, but then an inevitable cooling arrives (a “fading flame”), bringing metaphorical ice and emptiness. Therefore, this is the best illustration of how the energy of Isa manifests in life situations — as a sudden coldness and freezing of feelings after a stormy beginning.
Hávamál, Stanza 51:
“Eldi heitari
brennr með illum vinum
friðr fimm daga,
en þá sloknar,
er inn sétti kemr,
ok versnar allr vinskapr.”
Hotter than fire
among bad friends
burns peace for five days,
but then it goes out
when the sixth comes,
and all friendship turns for the worse.
General Meaning of the Isa Rune
Ice belongs to the world of death and its lowest region — Niflheim. In ancient times in the North, the expression “to make cold” meant “to kill.” Ice correlates with the period of rest during winter and during death: the hibernation of bears, a state directly preceding rebirth. In the Norse tradition, ice is the fifth element. Consequently, the rune of ice looks like a nail and possesses similar qualities. It is capable of “nailing” something to the ground.
Furthermore, Isa symbolizes a period of pause, silence, and contemplation. Like ice, it can freeze progress, but it can also preserve and protect.
Therefore, this rune advises exercising patience and caution. It reminds you of the need to slow down, avoid reckless actions, and focus on internal growth. Although it can indicate stagnation, it simultaneously provides clarity and stability.

A pause, introspection, temporary delays, stabilization, fixation at a certain stage.
Reversed Position
Isa has no reversed form. Because the symbol is a single vertical line, it remains identical when flipped.

In love, this rune indicates that the cooling in the relationship has gone too far. Consequently, there is a probability that this relationship can no longer be saved. In addition, it can indicate infidelity on the part of both the partner being asked about and the questioner themselves.
