Hávamál, Stanza 59:
“Ár skal rísa,
sá er á yrkjendr fáa,
ok ganga síns verka á vit;
margt of dvelr,
þann er um morgin sefr,
hálfr er auðr und hvötum.”
Early shall he rise
who has few workers,
and go to see to his work;
much holds back
him who sleeps the morning away,
half the wealth belongs to the brisk (active).
General Meaning of the Dagaz Rune
Dagaz is the rune of the day. However, what is meant here is not the day as a unit of time, but specifically daylight. Although, it still designates the interval from dawn to sunset.
Therefore, this rune signifies enlightenment, clarity, and awakening. In ancient times, it was carved on doors and windows to protect the house from witchcraft.
Furthermore, Dagaz is the rune of culmination, the peak, and the highest point. If the Jera rune symbolizes the year that begins on the day of the winter solstice, then Dagaz represents the summer solstice. Consequently, it is the highest point of any cycle and, at the same time, the beginning of a new one.
In terms of shape, Dagaz resembles a butterfly. This is not accidental, because the rune symbolizes that very step when a creature leaves the chrysalis and transitions into a completely new reality.
