Othala Rune in the Poetic Edda
Othala is a safe space, one’s own territory, and a roof over one’s head that gives a person status, independence, and protection. One’s own home, into which the labor of ancestors or your own efforts have been invested, is sacred for a Norse person.
Therefore, Stanza 36 literally manifests this value. Odin explicitly states that one’s own home is the best, even if it is tiny. The main thing is that you are the master there. Consequently, a person who has their own hearth is not forced to beg and depend on the mercy of others. This is the purest earthly and sacred embodiment of the Othala energy.
Hávamál, Stanza 36:
“Bú er betra,
þótt lítit sé,
halr er heima hverr;
þótt tvær geitr eigi
ok taugreftan sal,
þat er þó betra en bæn.”
A homestead is better,
though it be small,
every man is a master at home;
though one owns but two goats
and a rope-roofed hall,
that is still better than begging.
General Meaning of the Othala Rune
